Perry is she is Chicago native, born to Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. Her first television roles included two episodes as Jackie Harris (as seen in flashback) on the ABC sitcom Roseanne, the character portrayed by her mom. Her parents did not allow her to begin acting by her parents until an adulthood stage, because they were concerned about the strain it might result in. Perry claims she never wanted to become an actor during high school but decided to take up acting as a social activity at Northwestern University when she switched from Boston University. Perry was a graduate of Boston University, relocated in New York in search of TV roles. She landed small parts in shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent. But, her home-sickness drove her to California to find theater work. In 2013, she was a part of The Other Place on Broadway along with her mother. In 2015 she performed alongside her father and Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Anna Christie in the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. Perry played a lead role in nine episodes in 2016 of ABC's show The Family. Her father portrayed her in the ABC Drama Scandal. The same year she was cast as a young version of Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon, a spin-off of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory again playing a young model of the mother's character. The role was given an audition to the actress, regardless of the fact that she was a cousin with the role.
